As the 25 members of the first cohort of the Yours to Lose – Advanced Medical School Acceptance Program crossed the stage, they participated in a formal signing and donned a green coat.
The ceremony, held Aug. 19, marked the start of the students’ pre-med journey at Missouri Southern … one that will challenge them as they work to become the next generation of physicians.
The Yours to Lose program is an exclusive, one-of-a-kind partnership with KCU. It allows a cohort of Missouri Southern students to be admitted to KCU’s new Joplin medical school at the same time they are accepted to MSSU. As pre-med students, they will obtain their bachelor’s degree in biology during an accelerated, three-year course of study before seamlessly transitioning into their first year of medical school. The program will not require them to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
“As our first cohort of students, you are on a path quite different from other students as Missouri Southern,” said Dr. Paula Carson, vice president for academic affairs. “You’ll find a curriculum designed with your status as pre-med students in mind. Over the next three years, you’ll work closely together – becoming a tight-knit group through classroom work and special activities being put together by Dr. Donna Johnson, our director of the Yours to Lose program.”
Parents, family and friends filled Connor Ballroom for the ceremony, which also included remarks from Dr. Alan Marble, president of MSSU, and Dr. Ed O’Connor, provost of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.
“It will be a long road,” O’Connor said, addressing the students. “But believe me when I say it will be worth it.”
